Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children book review [ a book full of creepy, dark and mysterious photographs]

                       Synopsis

The Story

This was the first time I read a book from Ransom Riggs, and I'm quite surprised to find out that this actually was his first written book novel.

Just at the first pages of the book I knew I was going to have nightmares due to the photographs. Speaking of which, something that made the book special for me, and helped the story to be more realistic or feel that way, were the odd photographs of Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children.

Fortunately, the nightmare thing did not happen. At the end of the day, this book beside being a horror fiction, dark fantasy novel, is in the category of YA literature... so obviously we are going to have a little romance with adventure.

In fact, the first hundred pages of the book is full of dark, suspense and tension and you don't know what's going to happen next or when the monsters are going to come out of the darkness, but eventually the story gets a little fancy and juvenile then. A little.

The Characters

The book is called “Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children” so you can already guess the story is going to be about some kids with odd and supernatural abilities.

I tend to like those books which not only focus on the main character but the secondary characters as well. My feelings for Jacob were neutral through most of the book. I really don't care that much when it comes to main characters, you know they are always going to survive and most of the time they are described as these badasses boys or girls in a shallow way. Fortunately, not in this occasion.

Though, I really get invested in Jacob and his grandfather relation from the first, and all the dilemma with his cute and strange stories that he used to tell him when he was just a kid. Most of the YA book authors don't pay much attention and thought when it comes to family relationships, and regularly the parents are so incompetent. Seriously? How many times do you wonder where are the parents?

My Overall Opinion

I'm a total sucker when it comes to dark fantasy and horror (sorry for the chosen words) and I would love to read more books of this genre. Books full of tension, mystery, great plot twists and even disturbing ones, and without cheap gore.

I'm hoping to see more development in the romance between Jacob and Emma. Also, to know more about the extraordinary world of Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children.

Thanks, Ransom Riggs! Now I feel like a peculiar child myself.

But tell me, have you read this book? What did you think about it?

Thanks for your attention and reading this post! 😽
